Why This Exists
In early 2026, the official HistoricPlaces.ca (opens in new tab) website was decommissioned. The original platform, built on technology from 2004, could no longer meet modern federal security compliance standards. When the government made the difficult decision to sunset the website, a significant piece of Canada's digital heritage was at risk of disappearing.
We believe that data about Canada's historic places should remain accessible to researchers, students, and the public.
How It Works
This archive serves as a static "snapshot" of the data as it existed just prior to the shutdown.
1The Old Way
The original site relied on dynamic legacy code (.aspx) that required expensive, constant security patching.
2The New Way
This archive is built on a modern static architecture. It serves the original text and images as flat files, which are secure by default, load instantly, and require zero processing power to maintain.
Data Accuracy
Please note that because this is a static archive:
1. No New Updates
The content is frozen in time. New historic designations made after the shutdown date will not appear here.
2. Functionality
Some interactive features of the original site (such as user accounts or complex search filters) may have been simplified or removed to ensure long-term stability.
